The Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or KCDC, has developed an Olympic Task Force that’s been in operation since September.

The KCDC, which is part of South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare, started this task force in order to prevent and respond to any contagious illnesses that may spread during the 2018 Winter Olympics, which is being held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

In addition to diseases that originate in South Korea, the task force is also charged with keeping in check many infectious disease types that may enter the country during the course of the Olympic games.

Bird Flu Reports

Recently, outbreaks of bird flu have been prevalent throughout the area, and nearby farms have been reporting suspected cases. In response, the director of the KCDC, Jeong Eun-Kyeong, has issued a ban on any transportation of poultry in the area.

Despite this, a nearby farm in Pocheon reported that about 30 birds have died since January 2.

Preliminary testing revealed that the birds were infected with avian influenza. To prevent further spread of this highly contagious form of the flu, the Korean government will carry out inspections of any farms within three kilometers of the affected area.

Olympic Athletes and Guests

In the past few months, many outbreaks of bird flu have been cited throughout the country, and officials are worried about an outbreak at the Olympic games.

The health of the athletes, guests, and attendees are of top priority, and an outbreak could not only cause ill health for many, but it could also be seen as a source of national embarrassment for the South Korean people. Government officials have culled over 300,000 chickens within that three-kilometer radius as a precaution.

KCDC Response Team

During the games, the KCDC will have a response team, investigators, and an emergency station running 24 hours a day to deal with any infectious disease outbreak as soon as possible.

Because so many people will be entering the country from around the world, all visitors will need to go into quarantine in order to detect any fever.

In addition, visitors are asked to fill out health questionnaires, and research will be done about each participating country to see what illnesses may appear.

South Korea Travel

If you plan on traveling to South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, it’s important to take any precautions necessary to protect your health and the health of those around you. For more information, read this helpful guide issued by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Make sure all your vaccinations are up to date, monitor any travel warnings and alerts during your trip, and avoid touching any animals that you may encounter while there. In addition, pack important medications, and stay away from anyone who seems to be displaying any symptoms of illness.

Infectious Diseases and Transmission

Because infectious diseases can be transmitted in so many different ways, it’s important to know about all the ways that diseases enter your body.

In addition to physical contact, some infectious diseases are passed through microbes. It’s possible to transmit diseases through liquids, food, body fluids, airborne inhalation, or contaminated objects, so always remember to stay protected, especially for those with compromised immune systems.
